Undeniably, the COVID-19 pandemic has put immense strain on national healthcare systems around the world and has brought unprecedented complications to the world economy, which are expected to have complex and lasting consequences. Healthcare systems were severely tested; among them Greece’s national healthcare system, whose long-standing structural problems were augmented by the health emergency and needed to be urgently addressed to meet the pressing needs that arose. Now, following the first phase of the crisis, we are tentatively making our way toward a new normality, urged to keep ourselves—and others—healthy and safe by implementing a series of new regulations and safety protocols in our daily lives and work as authorities develop and adopt structured approaches to protect the public.
But could this state of emergency also pose an opportunity to overcome the systemic problems and chronic issues in our healthcare system? Can we build upon our newfound knowledge and incentive to shape a more sustainable, efficient and inclusive healthcare system? And what role can technology play to this end?
