The Copernicus Hackathon will give you the chance to meet people that share the same interest with you on the ways Space Technologies can be used in order to explore many application fields here on Earth. Together with other enthusiastic people you will get free access to Copernicus space data, support from mentors and the option to follow several business and technical workshops.

The Copernicus Hackathon in Athens, part of the European Union Copernicus Start-up Programme, is set to facilitate the co-creation of disruptive and breakthrough solutions, new business ideas and opportunities based on Copernicus data and services in Athens, Greece.
Participants will be invited to freely choose among cutting edge Copernicus challenges using their creativity and inspiration and with the guidance of the mentors, experts, supporters and advisors they will develop their own disruptive ideas that will shape the future of EO and space value chains. The Copernicus Hackathon in Athens will also focus on challenges of local interest (maritime sector, agricultural sector and recent key challenges for Greece (forest fires, floods, sea pollution, homeland security), but also on ways that technologies from other sectors can provide an added-value in the processing of EO data.
The Copernicus Hackathon in Athens will not be limited to the actual competition event, but it will be a long process offering all necessary support for ideas to be transformed into matured products and services and teams to successful start-ups.
It includes warmup events and training before the hackathon, to allow for the building of stronger bonds among team members and a deeper understanding of the challenges, and continues after the competition by supporting the selected winners with a targeted growth program that includes further training and mentoring, and a network high-profile mentors to achieve the transformation of ideas into successful start-ups. The overall winner will also receive as a prize one seat in the Copernicus Accelerator (a one-year coaching scheme organised by the EC).
Corallia and local organisers will work closely with AZO and will involve its extensive network of relevant partners from the Copernicus ecosystem that will be activated to create the most influential deal flow before the event and the most supportive post-event activity for the winning teams.
The Copernicus Hackathon Programme in Athens is a complete innovation journey that will excite and reward those who will participate in it.
You do not need to be a Rocket Scientist!
Participants shall have skills relevant to software development, computer programming, graphic and interface designers, GIS and EO experts, informatics, business management, project management and thematic expertise (agriculture, maritime, forestry, oil & gas, etc). The Copernicus Hackathon in Athens is also open to anyone else with any level of education and from any scientific and professional background to support the teams in transforming technical developments into viable business plans. It is addressed to students, PhDs, young scientists, engineers, finance experts, communication experts, marketeers, business people, entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs-to-be etc. as well as new technology enthusiasts, those excited by the development of innovative tools, solutions, applications, processes and new business models.
All participants to the Copernicus Hackathon in Athens shall be of legal age and resident of one of the Copernicus participating countries (EU Member States + Norway and Iceland).
Participants are requested to register for the Copernicus Hackathon before October 12 @14:00 at https://goo.gl/c3MsZs. Participation is limited to maximum 150 participants. The Organizer may decide to close the registration before the deadline in case the maximum number of participants is reached. Only participation requests submitted within the given submission period will be considered valid. No participation request will be accepted after the submission deadline.
Participants should be aware that after the successful submission of a valid participation request a confirmation receipt will be sent via email. The Organizer reserves the right to reject a participation request and/or give priority to one participation request over another, in order to ensure a good balance and an appropriate representation of geographic spread, gender, age, education, discipline or other related characteristics, to achieve the best outcome and optimal implementation of the Copernicus Hackathon.
Onsite registration will be possible on 12th October 2018 up to 14:00 at the event location, on a first come first serve basis. The Organizer reserves the right to close the onsite registration in case the maximum number of Participants is reached.
Participants can register alone or in teams of three to five. If not already registered as teams, the Organizer will match the Participants before or during the Hackathon to ensure that each team is composed of participants with a mix of relevant skills as mentioned above. Individual applications will not be able to take part in the contest without joining a team. The organisers will offer various tools (social media, warmup events, etc) to support the formation of strong and complementary teams.
The winning team will receive as prize one seat in the Copernicus Accelerator (a one-year coaching scheme organised by the EC). The Copernicus Accelerator offers a customised business development scheme for 50 visionary start-ups and entrepreneurs from Copernicus Participating Countries (EU, Norway and Iceland) per year. These 50 candidates all have in common that they develop innovative ideas which are tackling societal challenges by using Earth observation (EO) data, especially from Copernicus. Since 2016, the Copernicus Accelerator supports selected participants to move beyond idea conception into real commercial ventures. Each year, selected participants are matched with high-level professionals and benefit from individual mentoring alongside further training opportunities such as bootcamps and webinars and dedicated marketing support. The Copernicus Accelerator is an initiative of the European Commission’s DG Growth, and is part of the Copernicus Start-up Programme, which is designed to accompany start-ups from the generation of a business idea to its full commercialisation. Participation to the Copernicus Hackathon is free of charge. Meals will be provided for the whole duration of the Copernicus Hackathon. The participants shall bring their own devices (chargers, power strip, etc) with Wi-Fi capability. The Organiser will provide the credentials for free accessing internet resources for the duration of the event.
If a sufficient number of applications are gathered from cities in mainland Greece, buses from Thessaloniki and Patras will be hired by the Organizer to transfer applicants back and forth free of charge to Athens.
The premises will be open to the participants throughout the duration of the event. The participants shall accept the terms and conditions of use of the facilities. Finally, they shall follow the instructions of the staff.
