Lecture-Performance
Spurred on by a major exhibition at New York’s MoMA in which female artists were severely under-represented, the Guerrilla Girls formed in 1985 to condemn the male-dominated art world. And these militant, anonymous feminists have kept their gorilla masks on ever since as they continue to battle sexism, racism and corruption in politics, art and pop culture. Using happenings, humour and subversive imagery, they shed light on the things that are kept hidden or overlooked, on injustice. The group has appeared at over 90 universities and museums as well as in the print media and on television, and have created posters, stickers, books and public art-works around the world.
